STORY

Lamont and Chanel Hobbs

Chanel Hobbs is a native of Petersburg, Virginia. She married her high school sweet heart, Lamont Hobbs, in 1993. Originally struggling to have children, Lamont and Chanel have two daughters, Angel and Deja. As a family, we loved to travel, have living room dance parties, and take long walks through the neighborhood. In 2008, our lives changed forever. My mom, Chanel Hobbs, was diagnosed with ALS at the young age of 39 and given only 2-5 years to live. With two young children, 8 and 7, my parents were determined to fight. Despite the doctor's statement in 2008, I am blessed to say that my mom has now been living with ALS for almost 16 years and is 54 years old. She is unable to walk, talk, eat, or breathe on her own, but she still is a wonderful mother, devoted wife, active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., First Lady at Metropolitan Baptist Church, and works full time as a Deputy Comptroller for the State of Virginia.

You may wonder why You Can is dedicated to both of my parents and not just my mom as she is the one physically fighting this gruesome disease. Well, I can honestly say if it was not for my dad, Lamont Hobbs, being a devoted husband and father, my mom would not be on this earth today. In no way will I say this journey has been easy, however, as a faith based family we know God is on our side.

From the perspective of our Founder

MISSION

You Can's mission is to raise awareness and positively impact the lives of those with ALS and other disabilities.

Our motto is: "Do it for those who can't, because YOU CAN!"

VISION

You Can's vision is to change at least one person's life through our initiatives and docuseries.

We hope to expand and host events across the entire United States.

LOGO

Our logo is the Waning Gibbous Moon Phase. This was the moon phase the day of my parent's unity, June 5th, 1993. This moon phase shines more light than darkness; representing our life, my parents' life.

Waning means to have a progressively smaller part of its visible surface illuminated, so that it appears to decrease in size.

Representing You Can, where your life may seem to be partially covered by an obstacle/situation, but in reality you still have so much light and power to continue to push because, YOU CAN!

FOUNDER

Angel Monet Hobbs, MBA

Our Founder, Angel Monet Hobbs, is a native of Chesterfield, Virginia. Since a child Angel has always been described as nurturing. She often cares for others sometimes more than she cares for herself. Graduating from Hampton University, Angel made her impact on campus. She planned community service events for over 1,000 students, worked with Paramount Pictures Corporate Social Responsibility Team, and is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Throughout her past service initiatives, she has been intentional in using each opportunity to educate people on ALS. She is a multi-faceted entrepreneur, but You Can is by far her biggest accomplishment. With a goal and passion of always wanting to help the community, Angel is extremely proud to finally have her own non-profit organization bringing her ideas to life.
